What is the recipe for a killer sequel? Folks, let me tell you. Obviously you start with a well-crafted novel (Paul Carter is a Dead Man) that leaves you begging for more. Then you bring back some of the most memorable characters from said book along with some cleverly thought out new ones. Thrust those players to the forefront whilst leaving the previously mentioned title character to linger at the edge of the plot. Crank up the heat with generous portions of violence, non-stop action and sweary dialogue. Serve it up like the main dish in a three course literary feast and voilà, you have something worth sinking your hungry teeth into.Ryan Bracha has once again lived up to my expectations as one of my favorite indie authors with the latest installment of his epic Dead Man trilogy. The first book blew me away and Ben Turner's time at the helm was nothing short of perfect in its promise to carry the series to an entirely new level. I thought I'd read enough of the author's previous works to predict the direction he would go with the 2nd run. Turns out I don't know $#!@. I won't spoil any of the fun, but I will say that there is no cookie-cutter plot progression going on here. It will leave you guessing which way Bracha is heading next and screaming for more.
The dystopian world of New Britain described by Bracha is like Orwell's Oceania on steroids. Where people are force fed misinformation and self-serving ideologies by their leaders under the guise of their own "best interest". Like 1984, the similarities to our own society are disturbingly obvious. It's brilliant concept that only a few writers as versatile as Bracha could successfully pull off.

On the heels of the first in this series, we find upstart Ben Turner, out to quell the actions of violent rebel Nat Sweeny. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Turner, the expatriate and Sweeny, the vicious rebel, make the perfect team. And motivations become a complex mix as seeds sewn in the first book of this series, secrets untold, will be at the core of the New Britain's fate, and that of it's leader, Robert Lodge.
Love the style here. The story is structured well, where the titles of breaks themselves serve to further the intensity. A recommended read, as well as "Paul Carter is a Dead Man".
I've an image of a hirsute idiot-savant drooling down his chin and laughing as he watches his imaginary pals act out his fantasies in his minds-eye whilst his clumsy, hair-covered fingers work a chunky crayon describing their humiliation.
Och, they keep him happy enough, this hairy, sausage-fingered, piss-panted genius. His guardians throw him regular snacks (could do with cutting back on the burgers) and lavish praise on him for each dirty new jewel he unleashes.
The follow-up to the refreshingly-irreverent Paul Cart is a Dead Man is another magic bullet from the prolific Rain-Man Bracha.
A normal writer, with a fully-functioning set of senses would stick with what worked in the first Dead Man book. He'd reuse the wonderfully creative and engaging characters who propelled us through the dirty satire of Bracha's dystopian New Britain and we'd be happy to play wingman on the trip.
Rather than stick to the plan, Bracha throws the least likeable character from the first book, Ben Turner, front and centre, accompanied by his wonderful new creation, Nat Sweeney.
Ben Turner not only continues the excitement and inventiveness of Paul Carter but builds on, and surpasses its predecessor.
The pace is relentless and the plot marvellously, tightly-chaotic.
Yes, Bracha is kept in a small room, walls covered in Kim Kardashian and Bungle from Rainbow wallpaper splashed with the products of his self-abuse, but he's happy, well-fed and by God he's been busy.
