Willie is a fence (deals stolen goods) who has a little problem. It seems that there is a little Jewish man who has been following him around and he wants Sharon to find out why. Sharon finds out from the guy, Levin, that he thinks that Willie has in his inventory of stolen goods some Torah's that belong to synagogues across the country and he is out to retrieve them. Sharon sets up a meeting with Levin to discuss the missing items, but Levin is murdered in Willie's house before they can get down to business. Willie is arrested for the murder, so now Sharon job has changed to finding out who killed Levin in order to clear Willie. The problem with having criminal clients is that they lie all of the time. So, Sharon has to spend her time finding out who Willie and Levin are, all the while trying to stay ahead of a murderer who before the book ends will kill again to keep his secrets. This was a really well told story that highlights Sharon's abilities and weaknesses and just makes her a really likeable character.Product details

I was introduced to Marcia Muller's 'Sharon McCone' series this year and they do not disappoint. I love all of the!
I ordered all the Sharon McCone books. What a great read if you like mysteries.
This is a nice relaxing read. Not deep but entertaining.
I'm obsessed with reading this detective series. Set in San Francisco (early 80's) on real streets and in real neighborhoods I've visited. It's fun to see the character slowly develop through the series.
Another great episode in the Sharon McCone mystery series. I really enjoy Muller's writing style and character development. Only wish is that the entire series was available as a boxed set for .
Probably the least enjoyable Muller book I've read so far. This shows her early difficulties with character development and plot excitement. Her more recent novels have a lot more to offer the picky mystery reader. (McCone's life gets a lot more exciting as she ages!!!!)
Mixing up the torah business with the Santa Cruz mountains and PTSD and the flea market just somehow didn't work for me. Usually I enjoy Muller's ramblings around Northern California; however, the wandering just didn't work for me here.
Also, wondering why so many reviewers on feel it necessary to do a plot summary and possibly spoil key plot developments? A review ought to be our opinions, right, not giving away most of the story before we even open the book!
