A Guide to Bone Toothbrushes of the 19th and Early 20th Centuries Barbara E Mattick 9781441598615 Books Reviews

This monograph is extremely interesting and an asset to the study of dental history and archeological dating techniques. It should be in the library of every historian and archeologist working in the field within its time parameters.
I discovered this book last year while writing an honours thesis (in historical archaeology). Whilst my research was based on Australian assemblages, I had 30 odd toothbrushes that I wanted to attempt to date. This book became my god-send! Mattick provided information in an easy to comprehend format (which indicated that she knew what she was writing about), that I could not find anywhere else and the typology she had clearly painstakingly put together was incredible. I became slightly obsessed with my toothbrushes (I was actually investigating artefacts that assisted in maintaining personal hygiene in the mid-late 19th century, rather than just toothbrushes), and whilst my thesis is completed, I'm now trying to get a copy of this book, because it is an invaluble resource.
This book is very useful for dating bone toothbrushes. Barbara Mattick developed a very practical system which simplifies dating toothbrushes. I speak from my own experience, because I could date successfully two toothbrushes with the aid of Barbara Mattick’s book.

The advantage of dating toothbrushes is not only in determining how old a toothbrush is but also, as explained by this book, in gathering additional information, that can be drawn from the location in which the brush was found (e.g., social status of the people). Eventually, the toothbrush can even be assigned to a specific person if the residents at the location are known.

For people who do not need to date toothbrushes, the book is also very interesting. It contains excellent information about toothbrush history, toothbrush production, social history, companies, marketing of toothbrushes, etc. The book describes the situation mainly in Europe and the USA but also in Japan. For all who are interested in mouth hygiene and its development, this book is worth reading.
As the author of this book I hesitate to write a review of it, but I would like to help get the word out about it. It is, to the best of my knowledge, the most comprehensive study of toothbrushes made out of bone, an innovation attributed to Englishman William Addis who, in 1780, was the first to make a toothbrush out of bone rather than precious materials such as gold, silver, or ivory. The book provides a history of the technology of toothbrush making and an overview of the social aspects of toothbrushes. The heart of the book, though, is a typology of bone toothbrushes that helps one identify the date of a brush -- this being most useful to historical archaeologists. The book, however, is also very useful for historical reenactors, museum curators, and antique dealers, and students of dentistry. Although A Guide to Bone Toothbrushes of the 19th & Early 20th Centuries shows up as being unavailable on most sites, it can be purchased directly from the publisher, Xlibris. The book has received good reviews in several archaeological journals and a dental journals, but I leave it up to new readers and researchers to render their opinions.
